The Mason Punchers scored their second-consecutive shutout after giving up 47 points in the season opener as they blanked the Broncos on Friday in Sonora.

Mason (2-1) opened up a 19-0 halftime lead against Sonora and then preserved the shutout the rest of the way in the nondistrict game.

The Punchers are ranked fourth in the state in Class 2A Division I.

Sonora, which has scored more 40 points a game in opening the season with two wins, was stopped cold by the Punchers to fall to 2-1.

Klay Klaerner rushed for 102 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries to lead Mason.

Matthew Kerr completed 9 of 14 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns to give the Punchers a spark through the air.

Tad Kirby and Klaerner each caught a TD pass for Mason.

The Punchers held Sonora running back Brock Aschenbeck to just 88 yards after the senior has pushed past the 200-yard mark in each of the Broncos' first two wins this season.

Taylor Schmidt and Kerr each got an interception for Mason, while Oscar Ortiz recovered two fumbles.

Mason hosts 3A DI powerhouse Jim Ned on Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. The 3A DII Broncos travel to Wall — a 3A DI team which beat Mason to open the season.
