It was a banner day for competitors from Sonora and Brady high schools during the opening day of action at the Region I-3A track and field meet at Abilene Christian University's Elmer Gray Stadium on Friday.

Sonora's Lane Cahill placed first in the girls' pole vault with an effort of 11 feet, 9 inches, and Brady's Jack Marshall was the boys' long jump champion at 21-3.

Evan Shannon had a second-place finish for Sonora with a time of 9:51.03 in the 3200-meter run.

The top two finishers in each event advance to the 3A UIL state meet May 10 at the University of Texas' Mike Myers Track Complex in Austin.

The top third-place finisher among the four regions will earn a wild-card entry to the state meet.

Wall senior Sawyer Lloyd had a third-place finish in the girls' long jump with a 17-6 and will wait to see if she can earn a wild card.

Brady's Taylor Limbaugh had a third-place showing in the 3,200 with a clocking of 11:30.22.

The regional meet concludes Saturday.
