A three-run second inning proved to be enough for the Sonora Broncos to beat Ballinger 12-7 in their District 4-3A opener on Tuesday.
The Broncos scored four runs across the first two innings before the Bearcats responded in the bottom of the second. Cole Zentner scored on a fielder's choice in the inning to get Ballinger on the board.
Eddie Infante picked Sonora's scoring up in the next inning with an RBI single. Logan McDonald would come around to score the very next batter on an error to put Sonora up 6-1.
Sonora added another four runs in the sixth inning before Ballinger had their first multi-run inning of the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Daniel Gonzales picked up the win on the mound and helped his own cause. Gonzales was 1-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate and pitched 6 2/3 innings with seven runs allowed against four strikeouts.
Dylan Taylor, Brock Aschenbeck and Wesley Dutton each had multi-hit games for the Broncos.
Bradyn Bowman was the only Bearcat with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate for Ballinger. Fernando Falcon and Kennedy Byler each had two RBIs for Ballinger
DJ Cavazos was pitcher of record for Ballinger, allowing seven runs on five hits with four strikeouts in four innings of work.
Sonora (6-1, 1-0) will be in the San Angelo JV tournament this weekend before resuming district play next Tuesday at Wall. Ballinger (4-6, 0-1) will be in the Jim Ned tournament this weekend before hosting Reagan County on March 15.
