Sonora High School girls athletes finally got to cut down some nets with a Class 3A bidistrict win over Presidio.

Skylar Harris scored 16 points against Presidio on Monday in Fort Stockton to help lead the Lady Broncos to the area round, where they will face No. 3-ranked Idalou in a 6 p.m. game Thursday in Colorado City.

The Lady Broncos (26-7 overall) have won recent playoff games in volleyball, but they don’t let you cut down those nets.

For the first time since 2015, Sonora won a basketball playoff game. For the first time since 2016, the Lady Broncos made the playoffs. The turnaround comes after two consecutive single-digit win seasons.

"More importantly, this senior class finally won a gold ball. They finally got to cut a net down," Sonora head coach Clayton Harris said. “We play in a district with Wall. The only way we’re going to get to cut down a net is if we win a playoff game.”

Three seniors – Jackilyn Sykes, Karah Martinez and Cheyenne Haynes – had been in the program for four years and never been in a playoff game, said the coach, who took over the program this year after stints at Hondo, Brenham and Mineola.

Brae Harris scored seven points and had 13 rebounds, five assists and six steals for Sonora, which won just six games over the last two seasons.

Another senior, Mary Kyle Johnson, added five points and had 12 rebounds. Johnson is an all-state volleyball player who rejoined the basketball program this year.
