ABILENE -- Sonora High School has dominated its track and field meets all season, but regional and state can be a different story.
Seniors Abel Cruz, Kaden Cordell and Jarrett Jackson made sure the script stayed the same as the Broncos scored 90 points to beat Brock by 32 points to win the team title in the boys division at the Region I-3A Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Abilene Christian University's Elmer Gray Stadium.
“As many as we graduated last year, we were plenty senior heavy and we only have three seniors this year, but those guys have carried us all year long,” said coach Eddie Favila, who has coached the Sonora boys for 23 years.
Sonora won all three relays, junior Willie Munoz won the 300 hurdles, junior Evan Shannon was second in the 1,600 and Jackson was second in the 100 meters as the Broncos ran away with the team title.
The Wall girls also won the regional title but they will have to share it with two other teams.
The relay team of Maci Beeles, Shaylee Shiller, Sawyer Lloyd and Jayden Fiebiger won the 4x400 relay from start to finish to tie with Slaton and Spearman for the team title with 54 points.
Lloyd and Fiebiger – both juniors who were part of Wall’s school-record shattering finish last year at the state meet – were already in first place by the third leg of the relay even though Beeles and Shiller are just freshmen.
“It’s really awesome that we can depend on them. Not many freshman get to come up and do this but we’re really glad they’re here,” said Lloyd.
“It’s good they’re doing so good right now because it will be literally the exact same team next year,” said Fiebiger, who also won the 800 and was third in the 400.
The top two finishers in each event advance to the UIL State Track and Field Championships on May 11-12 in Austin. Third-place finishers could also earn a wild-card berth to state provided they have the best mark among the third-place finishers from the four regions in Texas.
Jackson, who was a two-time All-West Texas running back for the Broncos, said that although the Broncos were dominant all year, things can get dicey at the regional and state level.
“I really didn’t come into the meet thinking we were going to do that good because we didn’t have any throwers and we didn’t do very good in field events,” said Jackson, who ran on both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
